What still wins local search for a local business

Most of what wins local search for a local business has not changed in five years. A page for every city you work in, written for that city. A Google Business Profile that is actually maintained. Reviews that keep coming. Fewer fake competitors in the map pack. What has changed is how fast and how cheaply a small shop can do all of it well.

The city page is still the unit of work

When someone in Burlington searches for a service, Google is looking for the page that best answers that question for Burlington. A home page that mentions Burlington in a list of twenty cities is not that page. A dedicated page that talks about Burlington neighbourhoods and the questions Burlington customers ask is.

Above All Awnings had zero city pages when we started. After building seven and running the rest of the engine, Google clicks were up 222% for the 2026 season and their lead sheet shows 533 website enquiries in 2026 so far. The case study has every number and its source.

The profile is a storefront, not a listing

Google rewards activity on the Business Profile. Weekly posts, fresh photos, answered reviews and a complete service list are ranking signals, and they are also what a customer sees before they call. Most businesses set the profile up once. Keeping it alive every week is the cheapest advantage in local search, and it is the whole of our GBP Growth tier.

Competitor defence works

Keyword-stuffed business names and fake listings sit above honest businesses in the map pack every day. Google removes them when they are reported properly. Every one that goes moves you up a spot. It is unglamorous work, and it is in every Beacon engagement.

What AI changed

The research, the keyword-by-city map, the competitor analysis and the first draft of every page now come out of an agent pipeline we run ourselves. That does not change what a good city page is. It changes how many a small shop can build and maintain, and what it costs. A person still edits and approves every page before Google sees it, because the pipeline is good at drafts and a human is good at knowing what a Burlington customer will believe.

What to do this month

If you do nothing else: post to your profile once a week, ask every finished job for a review, and look at the map pack for your main search with a sceptical eye. If a competitor’s name is a sentence, report it.
